Emission System Deletes – the great debate

cummins emission system

One question we are always asked – “Is deleting my DPF / EGR / SCR system illegal?” There is no black and white answer to this question(in Alberta). As far as the government goes, any modification that does not meet OEM specifications is “illegal”. Do they test NOx gas in Alberta? No. Are they going to anytime soon? Probably not. What the government plans on doing is making it mandatory for CVIP licensed shops in Alberta to visually inspect the condition of the after treatment system and fail the truck if any tampering has been identified.

It has been proven time and time again that removing the after treatment systems increases engine reliability and overall lower operating cost (think not buying DEF / faulty sensors anymore). Ive been told it saves fuel and understand that the Hydrocarbon doser is no longer functioning but have never seen a “worth while” increase in MPG.

That being said, we have also seen EGR / after treatment systems offer little to no stress for the owner when doing simple maintenance every time the oil gets changed.

Regardless of which side you stand on, its important to know that as of right now, deleted / bypassed emissions systems will not cause a truck to fail a CVIP (in Alberta)… BUT it very well could in the near future.

Food for thought.

I would love to hear your thoughts
